Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy has dismissed the current wave of third party AI shopping agents, including Meta's Muse, saying the experience they offer is still not great, nor more convenient than going directly to a retailer. His criticism centered on convenience and user experience rather than any specific technical shortcoming in how the agents work.

Jassy's comments came as Amazon continues pushing its own answer to the category, Alexa for shopping. The company says more than 400 million customers used the tool over the past year, with customer interactions growing 570% year over year. Amazon also said U.S. customers who use its shopping agent spend 50% more per order than customers who do not.

Meta's Muse, meanwhile, has shown its own momentum since launching in early September. The assistant briefly became the top free app on Apple's App Store, and more than 10 million users across the U.S. and Canada have activated it since release. Muse has struck partnerships with Shopify, Walmart, and Best Buy, and shopping is reportedly its primary use case, with average transactions through the assistant exceeding $200.

The dueling numbers point to a broader fight over who gets to sit between shoppers and the retailers they buy from. Amazon's advantage is scale built over decades of direct retail relationships, while Muse is betting that a general purpose AI assistant already embedded in Meta's apps can pull shopping traffic away from retailers' own sites and apps. Jassy's dismissal of Muse suggests Amazon does not yet see that bet as a serious threat, even as Meta's assistant racks up downloads and transaction volume of its own.
