Apollo Global Management has confirmed that hackers broke into some of its cloud systems in July by tricking employees rather than exploiting a technical flaw. The private equity firm said unauthorized access to certain cloud platforms occurred between July 6 and July 10, and it disclosed the breach in a filing with California's attorney general on August 21.

The attackers relied on a technique known as vishing, calling employees on their personal phones while posing as internal IT staff. Victims were then directed to fake websites built to capture their passwords and multifactor authentication codes, giving the hackers a way into systems that would otherwise have required more than a stolen password to access.

The information potentially exposed includes names, dates of birth, contact details, home addresses and Social Security numbers. Apollo said it has found no evidence so far that any of the stolen data has been posted publicly or used for identity theft or fraud.

Apollo has opened an investigation, notified law enforcement, and tightened its security measures in response. The firm is also offering affected individuals 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services, a standard response for breaches involving Social Security numbers.

The incident adds Apollo to a growing list of major hedge funds and financial firms that have faced attempted or successful cyberattacks in recent weeks. Social engineering attacks like vishing have become an increasingly common way for hackers to get around otherwise strong technical defenses, since they target employees directly rather than trying to break through a firm's software or network security.
