Arini Capital Management, the hedge fund run by former Credit Suisse star trader Hamza Lemssouguer, lost roughly 8 percent in July as a bet on corporate credit turned against it. The decline marks a sharp reversal for a fund that has built a reputation on some of the stronger returns in the credit hedge fund world since Lemssouguer struck out on his own.

The loss traces back to a position in the debt of Aston Martin Lagonda, the British luxury carmaker. Arini was part of a group of bondholders that held a stake in the company's debt, giving it a seat at the table in how Aston Martin managed its finances.

That position was upended when Aston Martin signed a 550 million pound, or roughly 750 million dollar, financing deal with HPS Investment Partners, the credit arm of BlackRock, to shore up its liquidity. The new arrangement effectively sidestepped the existing bondholder group Arini was part of, catching the fund on the wrong side of a financing decision it had no direct say in.

News of the deal triggered a selloff in Aston Martin's bonds, as the market repriced the debt to reflect its diminished standing relative to the new BlackRock backed financing. That drop in bond prices fed directly into Arini's July losses, given the size of the fund's exposure to the position.

Lemssouguer left Credit Suisse to launch Arini in 2020 after turning down an offer to manage several billion dollars for another firm, betting instead on building his own shop. The July loss does not erase the fund's longer track record, but it is a reminder that even well regarded credit managers remain exposed to decisions made by the companies whose debt they hold, decisions a bondholder does not always get to influence.
