MacKenzie Scott has given roughly 461 million dollars to public education institutions in California since 2021, according to a tally of gifts made through her giving initiative, Yield Giving. The money went to sixteen different schools and colleges over four years, averaging about 28.8 million dollars per institution, with close to 90 percent of the total directed toward higher education rather than K through 12 schools.

The largest recipient has been California State University, Northridge, which has received a cumulative 103 million dollars from Scott. Robert Taylor, chair of the CSUN Foundation board, has pointed to the gifts as a rare source of flexible funding at a time when public universities are managing tight budgets. UC Merced has received 58 million dollars cumulatively, while California State University, East Bay has received 50 million dollars.

Smaller but still substantial gifts have gone to institutions such as Santa Barbara City College and Fresno Unified School District, each receiving 20 million dollars. The spread across community colleges, a K through 12 district and four year universities reflects the range of public education institutions Scott has chosen to fund in the state.

What distinguishes Scott's approach is that the gifts come with no restrictions on how they can be spent, unlike many large philanthropic donations that are earmarked for specific programs or buildings. Scott has said her giving targets what she calls mission aligned ventures run by people who are already doing the work, particularly organizations she considers undercapitalized relative to their impact. In practice that has meant a consistent focus on institutions serving first generation college students and other underrepresented groups.

The California gifts are part of a much larger pattern for Scott, who has given away billions of dollars since 2019 across thousands of organizations nationwide, ranging from community colleges and historically Black colleges to food banks and legal aid groups. Unlike many major donors, Scott generally does not publicize individual gifts herself, and the amounts and recipients typically become known only when the institutions choose to disclose them.
